Research Β· biz/research/2026-07-24-firecrawl-market-scan.md
2026-07-24 β Live market scan (self-hosted Firecrawl)
What this is. A deeper competitor/pricing pass that pulls live pages from the
real competitor sites, rather than the US/UK proxies and single-source figures the
earlier July research flagged as gaps. Run through a self-hosted Firecrawl instance
(Docker, on zulzi-gpu:3102) so there's no per-scrape cost and the raw markdown is
archived for audit.
TL;DR β the six things that actually matter
- BizAI is the real competitive story, not "a R999 voice bot."
bizai.co.za is a
Claude-powered, full-stack SA AI-CRM platform (R599βR7,500/mo) that bundles a
"free" website into its subscription from the R1,850/mo tier up. That overlaps both
Daniel's WhatsApp-assistant add-on and the website care plan. It's SA-built,
POPIA-first, Meta Business Partner, Sage-integrated. This is the sharpest thing the
scan found β see Β§C.
- The cheapest human phone-answering is R790/mo, not R6,000.
virtualreceptionist.co.za
starts at R790/mo (200 calls, incl VAT). The old "R6kβ15k human reception" anchor was
the mid/high tier. This weakens the "much cheaper than a receptionist" pitch for the
R1,800/mo WhatsApp product at the low end (though those packages are call-answering only,
capped, business-hours). Re-cost before pitching β see Β§C.
- Kea Logic's "free audit" is just a
mailto: CTA, not an automated tool. The
danielslater.dev mirror (kealogic.dev, founder Taun Healy) has no public pricing
and its audit funnel is "email us for a report." The bar to match/beat their lead magnet
is low β even a lightweight automated audit would leapfrog them. They also quietly use
Webflow templates for lean clients (Melex), so they're not purely bespoke. See Β§A.
- Every SA pricing anchor in
PRICING.md Β§4 held up against live data (VegaTech
R395/650, Web Partner R299/499/699, Storyteller R499+VAT, PsychToday R199, iNet Xis
R6.5kβ25k, GoodX R450β2,500). The pricing model is well-calibrated β this scan validates
it. See Β§D corrections table.
- Navitas is a partner, not a competitor β and it hands Daniel his booking story.
navitas.co.za (R199β399/mo) sells an embeddable booking widget for "your own website,
one line of code, works with any site." That is the "keep your booking tool, get a real
site" play in Β§5b of PRICING.md β Daniel builds the site, Navitas/Bookem/RecoMed is the
embedded engine. See Β§C.
- Jake Rawlinson's Actually Africa is a good site, so it's a relationship/collab, not a
Repaint. Modern, image-forward, boutique-positioned. Low rebuild pain. The only openings
are the enquiry funnel (email/form only, no WhatsApp/booking) and Daniel's animated
tiny-agent signature. Treat like the africansurfaris warm-intro, not the mozguide rebuild.
See Β§E.

Useful framing (below) |
Kea Logic β the mirror competitor (profile, corrected)
- Positioning: "Simplicity and Logic. Digital tools that drive measurable growth and
efficiency." High-conversion websites + bespoke booking engines + AI tools. Explicitly
premium/high-ticket ("High-ticket clients expect a premium brand"). Founder: Taun Healy
(
taunhealy@kealogic.dev).
- Same playbook as DS: WordPressβrebuild for speed ("2Γ faster after removing WordPress",
the Melex case), conversion-first, brand + build, AI chatbots.
- CORRECTION to PROSPECTS.md: their "free automated website audit" (the thing DS was said
to lack) is not automated β the CTA is
REQUEST AN AUDIT β mailto:, i.e. a manual audit
offer framed as a magnet. And they use Webflow templates for lean-budget clients, not
pure bespoke. So the "they have a funnel we don't" gap is smaller than assumed.
- Portfolio confirms overlap: Falkon Detailers (auto valet + AI chatbot + booking engine),
Melex EVs, Nomad Gems, Tide Raider (confirms Kea built it), Blue Owl Media (drone/hospitality
- interactive pricing calculator), Ryoko (AI chatbot). Gap DS fills: animated/simulation
visuals β none in their book.
Implications for Daniel
- Price position is safe & differentiated. (Our own price has since moved β pricing locked
2026-07-29, see
../PRICING.md Β§4 for the re-run. The competitor numbers below
stand; the conclusion about where we sit does not.) As scanned: DS Essential R550 sat between
Web Partner's R499 and R699 and was cheaper than Storyteller R574 (incl VAT). Now: Host R450
undercuts Storyteller, Maintain R850 does not β so the price-win line is retired and Maintain
wins on the included hour + the monthly checks instead. Either way we were never selling on
price: the competitors are template-WordPress and we are bespoke + static (faster, no WP
maintenance) + distinctive animated work. Keep leaning on craft + speed + owned funnel.
- The audit lead-magnet decision (PROSPECTS open Q) is now easier: the benchmark (Kea) is a
manual email audit. A simple automated Signal-Audit-lite (free β converts to the paid
R3,500 Signal Audit) would out-position the closest competitor cheaply.
- SuperDupr's framing is a gift for the sales page: subscription web = "the website is a
living asset" vs a one-time build that "accumulates change fees." That's Daniel's
"subscription is the business" thesis in a buyer's own words. Their red flag to pre-empt:
vendor lock-in β answer it explicitly (you own your domain/content, export any time).

Implications
- Storyteller is the one to beat and DS already wins on paper: R550 flat (VAT-incl) β€ their
R574, and DS is bespoke + modern-stack + owned funnel vs their WordPress template. Say this
out loud in the therapist pamphlet.
- The real competition is the R50βR199 directory, not other builders. A solo therapist's
gut compares "R550 owned site" to "R199 Psychology Today / R50 Professional Minds listing."
The value story (owned brand + funnel vs a rented row you don't control) is the whole sell β
exactly what PRICING.md Β§4 already says. Confirmed.
- Page 52 teaches one lesson: testimonials. Their ~30-strong wall (incl. therapists,
tourism, UK clients) is their whole moat as a no-public-pricing solo. DS's biggest gap vs
the relationship-led incumbents is social proof β the nadia/berlein/aerias before-afters
need to become visible testimonials/case studies.
- iNet Xis R6,500β25,000 confirms the group-build anchor in Β§5b (entry R6,500 = old group number;
DS's R7,500 is fine). Their bundled "medical management system" is dated β DS's clean site +
embedded modern booking (Navitas/Bookem) beats it.

R790 (200 calls) Β· R1,280 Β· R2,065 Β· R6,125 (+R300 setup) |
Re-costs the "cheaper than a receptionist" pitch. |
The two re-costings that change the pitch
- BizAI reframes the whole segment. It's not "an R999 voice bot" β it's a Claude-powered
platform that gives a business AI reception + CRM + WhatsApp + a free website for
R1,850/mo. Daniel's R1,800/mo WhatsApp-only product now has to answer: "BizAI gives me
all that plus a site for the same money β why you?" The honest differentiators: (a) BizAI's
bundled sites are template landing pages, DS builds bespoke, distinctive sites;
(b) DS is WhatsApp-native + real calendar write-back vs a generic platform module;
(c) single-purpose, no CRM lock-in. But this needs a deliberate positioning answer.
- Human reception starts at R790/mo, not R6k. The "8β15% of a receptionist's cost"
framing (PRICING/practice-tools research) holds only against a full-time salaried
receptionist (R12kβ21k). Against the cheapest outsourced answering (R790/200 calls),
R1,800 is more expensive β so for price-sensitive solos, sell on after-hours capture /
no-show reduction / WhatsApp-native / booking write-back, not raw cost saving. (The R790
tier is capped, call-only, business-hours β DS's real edge.)
Also confirmed
- The "no one bundles a marketing website" gap is real (Bookem/GoodX/Navitas/RecoMed all do
booking/PM, none do the site). DS's Β§5b pitch β "keep your Cliniko/Bookem/Navitas, get a real
site that embeds it" β is validated, and Navitas literally ships the embed widget to make
it one line of code.
- β° Time-sensitive (from
2026-07-17-whatsapp-sa.md): Meta's free 24h service window
changes Oct 1 2026 and its paid Business Agent launches Aug 1 2026. Re-cost WhatsApp
unit economics before quoting the R1,800 product hard.

E. Tourism / safari β client baselines + Jake
Client rebuild baselines (before/after material)
- African Surfaris (
africansurfaris.com, Dave Renaud) β Wix, image-light, mailto-only,
no prices, "bespoke Surfaris + packaged favourites + mini gap year." Confirms the
Repaint baseline (preview already live).
- Mozguide (
mozguide.com, Mike Slater) β WordPress, "Experience Mozambique like a local,
with the help of our Facebook community", Custom Safaris, tailor-made trips. Community-led,
no owned funnel. Confirms the rebuild thesis.
- Shaka Surf Camps (
shakasurfcamps.com) β Sri Lanka, 5/7/10/15-day packages. Dave's 2nd
Repaint candidate. Confirmed live.
Jake Rawlinson β Actually Africa (actuallyafrica.com) β friend / warm lead
- Confirmed: Jake Rawlinson is co-founder (with Dean Carlisle; 3rd: Dominique MarΓ©).
Raised on the edge of the Okavango Delta; his parents pioneered the Okavango safari
industry for 40 years (matches "his dad is involved"). Contact:
travel@actuallyafrica.com.
- Positioning: "Where adventure meets purpose" β bespoke luxury Botswana/Mozambique/Namibia
safaris + conservation (donates 3% of revenue to Lessons in Conservation, Dean's NPO).
Explicitly anti-template, founder-direct, boutique.
- Site quality: already good. Modern, image-forward, clean, on a hosted builder. This is
NOT a rebuild-pain prospect like mozguide/africansurfaris.
- Honest opening (low-pressure, warm): the only gaps are (1) enquiry is email + form only
β no WhatsApp-first / owned intake funnel (same play as africansurfaris); (2) no animated
tiny-agent signature (Daniel's differentiator β could suit a "purpose/wild" brand). Treat as
a relationship + possible funnel/animation collab, not a Repaint pitch. Best move: show
him the surfer/starling tiny-agent work as a "what if your hero moved" conversation.
Botswana peer benchmark
- Botswana Safari Company (
botswanasafaricompany.com, Wix) lists transparent per-trip
prices US$775β$10,175 on product pages (e-commerce model). Contrast: Actually Africa shows
no prices (bespoke enquiry). Neither is "wrong" β it's a positioning fork (productized vs
boutique). Useful reference if Jake ever wants to add a "sample itineraries + from-price" layer.
F. Open decisions for Daniel (surfaced by the scan)
Debrief 2026-07-26: re-discussed all six with Daniel. Recommended action order #1 β #3 β #2
(BizAI positioning Β· free automated audit Β· re-cost the R1,800 product before the Oct Meta change);
#4/#5/#6 lower urgency. All still open β none chosen to build yet. Pending Q on Meta's Aug/Oct
2026 changes answered from 2026-07-17-whatsapp-sa.md; no pricing numbers changed (validation only).
- WhatsApp product vs BizAI (priority #1) β do you reposition the R1,800/mo product against a Claude-powered
platform that bundles a free site? (Differentiate on bespoke + WhatsApp-native + no lock-in, or
narrow the product, or partner-not-compete?)
- Re-cost the R1,800 WhatsApp pitch (priority #2) β given human answering starts at R790, lead with
after-hours/no-show/WhatsApp-native value, not "cheaper than a receptionist"? (And re-check
unit economics before Meta's Aug/Oct 2026 changes.)
- Free automated audit? (priority #3) The closest competitor (Kea) only offers a manual email audit β
cheap win to build a free Signal-Audit-lite that funnels to the paid R3,500. (This was the open
Q in PROSPECTS.md β the answer just got easier.)
- Social proof β the incumbents (Page 52, Storyteller) win on testimonials. Prioritise turning
nadia/berlein/aerias/mozguide into visible case studies?
- Jake / Actually Africa β pursue as a warm relationship/animation collab (not a rebuild)?
- Navitas/Bookem as named booking partners β bake "keep your Navitas/Bookem, we embed it"
into the group/therapist pitch (Navitas ships the one-line widget)?
