Lychee.com / Henrik Bork — partnership-opportunity research & strategy
Compiled 2026-07-24 (Firecrawl on zulzi:3102 + 3 parallel research agents + primary-source Wayback scrape). Decision-support for a possible approach to Henrik Bork about reviving Lychee.com as a partnership where Daniel builds/operates and Henrik opens doors.
Kind: partner / venture-collab (NOT a Repaint client). Stage: idea → to-approach.
Origin: Daniel was looking at buying the domain lychee.com; digging into the WHOIS surfaced a real dormant hotel-tech business behind it, which is the more interesting play.
TL;DR (the one insight)
The standalone curated luxury OTA is a dead model — every peer either died or was absorbed by a bigger ecosystem (Mr & Mrs Smith→Hyatt, Tablet→Michelin, Design Hotels→Marriott, Splendia→Voyage Privé, Kiwi Collection survives only as the engine behind Visa's Luxury Hotel Collection; Lychee itself went dark). Curation now survives only as a feature of a bigger payments / loyalty / media ecosystem. BUT the demand backdrop is genuinely strong (Chinese HNWs now spend more on travel than on luxury goods). So a revival is credible — not as the OTA Lychee was, but as "curation-as-a-service / a VIP-benefits engine" powering a Chinese premium-card / private-bank / airline HNW programme — which is exactly the one part of Lychee that provably worked (its UnionPay / MasterCard / Air China co-brands). Daniel builds+operates (Nsuna track record); Henrik brings the card/bank/airline rolodex + China credibility. Go in to explore, framing him as advisor/equity partner, not "come run your startup again."
1. What Lychee.com actually was (verified, incl. primary source)
Lychee's own 2013 English "About" page (scraped from Wayback via Firecrawl):
"Lychee.com is a new Online Travel Agency based in Beijing… an opinion leader in the luxury segment of China's online travel market. Boasting China's most complete selection of the finest boutique- and luxury hotels worldwide… the online booking engine of choice for the discerning Chinese traveller… where China starts to travel in style!"
- Founded 2011, Beijing + Hong Kong. Chinese brand 荔枝选 ("Lychee Select") — "手选全球精品及奢华酒店" (hand-selected boutique & luxury hotels worldwide). 11–50 staff; est. rev US$1–5M. Bootstrapped / privately held (no VC evidence — the Crunchbase/Tracxn "Lychee" that raised $1.46M is a different Shenzhen edtech co).
- Curated supply: 500+ hotel brands; strategic ties named to Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Design Hotels, Peninsula, Six Senses, One&Only, Oberoi. Curated ("we reserve the right to choose"); no admission fee. Plus bespoke theme packages (safari/ski/shopping) for Chinese FITs.
- The real moat = premium-card distribution (this is the reusable DNA):
- China UnionPay — Lychee was its official & exclusive white-label provider for the UnionPay Premium Hotel Collection (~23M platinum/diamond cardholders).
- MasterCard — the "Dream Hotel Collection," marketed via 22 partner banks to 8M+ premium cardholders (free upgrades, complimentary breakfast).
- Air China — one of only 6 strategic OTA partners (PhoenixMiles earning on room spend).
- Ops: 24/7 Mandarin + English call centre; platform primarily Chinese, English expansion planned. Praised by Chinese Bazaar/Cosmopolitan/Esquire + Air China's inflight mag.
- Model in one line: a B2B2C luxury-hotel benefits engine for China's premium-card ecosystem — not just a consumer OTA.
Status now: dormant. lychee.com / www do not resolve (no A record) — website dead since ~last Wayback snapshot 2023-01-27. BUT domain deliberately kept alive: live Google Workspace + Mailgun + Amazon SES email (SPF), renewed to 2027-01-18, registrar Alibaba Cloud, registrant privacy-masked (CN/Beijing). Reads as owners holding a valuable dormant asset, not an operating business.
Why it died: no press/closure notice found. Best inference: wound down 2022–2023 (COVID gutted outbound luxury travel + Henrik already pivoted to consulting). UNVERIFIED — key question for Henrik.
Debunked: the "platform connecting international students with Chinese employers" description some aggregators show is a data mix-up with unrelated 'Lychee' companies, NOT a pivot. Lychee stayed a luxury-hotel business its whole verifiable life.
2. Henrik Bork — current reality & how to approach
- ~63. German ex-China correspondent (Süddeutsche Zeitung Beijing/Tokyo bureau chief; expelled 1995 as a Frankfurter Rundschau correspondent). Henri-Nannen-school trained (Wolf Schneider — plain, concise writing). Co-founded & managed Lychee.com, then founded Asia Waypoint (Beijing China comms/strategy consultancy).
- Very active publicly — but entirely on China tech/geopolitics (semiconductors, EVs, AI chips). Bylines for Vogel trade press (elektronikpraxis/MaschinenMarkt) + Cicero essays; most recent found 13 Jul 2026. Active on LinkedIn (~5,560 followers, posts his own articles). Zero travel/hospitality signal in years.
- Asia Waypoint = live shingle but stale web presence (©2022, Squarespace, blog dead since Apr 2020). His real flywheel is the journalism, not the consultancy.
- Reachable: YES, easily —
contact@asiawaypoint.com(office: Central Park 4-3003, Chaowai Dajie No. 6, Chaoyang, Beijing 100020) or a LinkedIn note (linkedin.com/in/henrikbork, warmest given daily engagement). - Appetite to operate a revival: LIKELY LOW (comfortable second act, no travel signal). Realistic role = advisor / door-opener / equity partner, not hands-on co-founder-operator.
- How to write to him: specific, well-researched, numbers-backed, anti-hype; acknowledge why him (his UnionPay-era OTA experience). Fluffy/"synergy" pitches bounce off a former investigative reporter instantly.
3. Market thesis 2026 — is a revival credible?
China OTA = ~89% top-5 oligopoly (Mordor, Jan 2026; market US$105bn 2025, 15% CAGR). Layered: Trip.com (50%+, premium/intl/inbound), Meituan (hotel room-nights leader), Tongcheng (WeChat/lower-tier), Fliggy (Alibaba, premium lean), Qunar (budget). Foreign players survive only supply-side / partner, or capturing Chinese travellers once they leave China — not as domestic consumer sites (Booking sold down its Trip.com stake; Agoda grows via Meituan/Fliggy deals). Luxury is already a defended sub-segment (Trip.com's Trip.Best "100 Luxury Hotels", Black-Diamond tier, TripPlus).
Demand is strong and the right kind:
- China = world's #1 outbound travel spender 2024: US$250.6bn (past 2019 peak; UN Tourism).
- Travel is the #1 category Chinese HNWIs plan to increase spend on (Hurun/Dragon Trail 2025); luxury goods contracting (Bain −3–5% 2025) while luxury experiences grow — money moving from things→trips.
- HNWs prize privacy/exclusivity/human service; only 30% trust AI chatbots → raises value of human-verified curation.
- Global: luxury tourism to grow fastest of any travel segment, US$239bn (2023)→US$391bn (2028) (McKinsey).
- New rails vs 2011: WeChat mini-programs (default storefront, >RMB2tn GMV/quarter), foreigners can bind cards to WeChat Pay/Alipay, MIIT pilots 100% foreign-owned internet businesses. Harder: PIPL/data-localization, ICP licensing, outbound-agency restrictions for foreign firms, discovery moved to RED/Douyin content.
The pattern that shapes the thesis — curated OTAs that survived did so as part of a bigger ecosystem:
| Curator | Fate |
|---|---|
| Mr & Mrs Smith | → Hyatt (~US$66m, 2023) |
| Tablet Hotels | → Michelin (2018) |
| Design Hotels | → Marriott |
| Splendia | → Voyage Privé |
| Kiwi Collection | survives = B2B engine behind Visa Luxury Hotel Collection |
| Zanadu (China peer, 2011) | survived by pivoting to content-first + WeChat + bespoke concierge |
| Lychee.com | went dark |
4. Four theses (ranked) — argue AGAINST rebuilding the old OTA
- ▶ A (strongest): Curation-as-a-service / VIP-benefits engine. White-label luxury-hotel curation + perks powering a Chinese premium-card / private-bank / insurer-concierge / airline HNW programme — modernised Lychee DNA (its MasterCard/Air China co-brand). Capital-light; rents demand (no consumer CAC); mostly B2B (dodges most consumer regulatory/ICP surface); defensible on supply relationships + editorial IP; validated (Kiwi→Visa). Con: vendor-dependent, long sales cycle, incumbents hold some slots.
- ▶ B (strong): WeChat-native luxury concierge membership (the Zanadu playbook, done better). Content-first (RED/Douyin) → mini-program + human concierge → bespoke outbound trips. Matches the model that survived; low regulatory barrier if operated offshore for outbound; high margin. Con: labour-intensive, small-scale ($6M-rev peers), hard moat.
- ▶ C (contrarian): Inbound-luxury-to-China curator riding the visa-free wave (foreign-invested agencies explicitly allowed inbound). Genuinely under-served; needs on-ground China entity/ops; volumes still thin.
- ▶ D (enabler, not standalone): AI luxury concierge / curation-as-AI-grounding-layer. Layer onto A/B; weak alone (only 30% trust AI chatbots; TripGenie has the scale).
Recommended: Thesis A as the spine + lean B as the consumer face; D as a layer; C as an optional second act.
5. Why Daniel + Henrik is complementary (not a client relationship)
- Henrik brings the slow/expensive-to-build part: card-network / bank / airline rolodex + China credibility. Crux risk: those contracts have almost certainly lapsed → would need renegotiating. Also unknown: who holds the domain/entity/equity, the co-founder(s)' identity, whether it was formally dissolved.
- Daniel brings build-and-operate — exactly the Nsuna track record (working hotels + restaurants + travel-discovery platform: guest app, booking, reviews, hotel portal, backend).
- Honest caveats: Henrik's appetite to operate is likely low (advisor/equity, not operator); this is a real China-market business bet in a heavily regulated space, not a web build. Explore & learn first.
6. Outreach message (drafted, ready to tune & send)
Channel: contact@asiawaypoint.com or LinkedIn. Subject: Lychee.com — the part that still works
Hi Henrik,
I came to lychee.com looking at domain names, then got pulled into the business behind it — the curated luxury collection, and especially the UnionPay and MasterCard co-brand programmes and the Air China partnership. That's what I actually want to write to you about.
I build and run hospitality platforms for a living — most recently Nsuna, covering hotels, restaurants and travel discovery end to end (guest app, booking and reviews, hotel-facing portal, the backend under it all). So I read Lychee with an operator's eye, and one thing stood out.
The standalone curated luxury OTA is basically a dead model now — Mr & Mrs Smith went to Hyatt, Tablet to Michelin, Design Hotels to Marriott. What survives is the piece you actually pioneered in China: curation as a benefits engine sitting inside a card, bank or airline programme (Kiwi Collection lives on only as the engine behind Visa's). And the demand side has never looked better — Chinese HNWs now spend more on travel than on luxury goods, and they still want human curation, not chatbots.
Which is a long way of saying: I think there's a sharper, more defensible version of Lychee to be built — and the hard part, the platform, is exactly what I do. The part I don't have is your relationships and read on the China card/bank/airline side.
Not pitching you a website, and not asking you to run a startup again. Just: is Lychee genuinely retired, or worth a fresh look — and would you be open to a short call to kick it around? I'd come with a concrete thesis, not a deck.
Either way, it was a pleasure learning what you built.
Best, Daniel [email · LinkedIn]
Before sending: (1) set how Daniel describes his Nsuna role + add one concrete proof point (e.g. "used by N hotels", a name); (2) keep or drop the domain-hunting opener — honest/disarming, but if he'd rather not signal interest in the name, swap line 1 for "I've been looking closely at curated luxury travel in China and kept coming back to what you built at Lychee."
7. Open questions to resolve (with Henrik / before committing)
- Do any UnionPay / MasterCard / Air China (or successor) relationships survive, or fully lapsed?
- Who holds
lychee.com+ the CN/HK legal entity + equity today? Co-founder(s)' identity? - Was it formally dissolved or just dormant — and the real reason (COVID vs strategic)?
- Henrik's actual appetite: advisor, equity partner, or purely a warm intro?
Domain fallback (if partnership doesn't fly)
lychee.com is a live-email, renewed, privacy-masked one-word .com — approach owner via Aliyun WHOIS form or a broker (GoDaddy/Sedo/Afternic). Likely high 5–6 figures USD and owner may decline. After ~3 years dark the brand equity is largely gone → you'd be buying the name, not a business.
